Individuals with international acclaim in sports, entertainment, or the arts have access to specialized visa pathways that recognize their talent and allow them to enter the U.S. for specific events or long-term positions.
Temporary (Nonimmigrant) Visa Options
O-1 Individuals of Extraordinary Ability
O-1 classification is the primary temporary visa for individuals of extraordinary ability in the arts, entertainment, motion picture/television industry, and athletics. Applicants must show a high level of achievement, typically through awards, press, critical recognition, commercial success, or evidence of distinguished contributions in the field.
P-1 Athletes and Entertainers
The P-1 visa is available to internationally recognized athletes, athletic teams, and entertainment groups.
- Athletes must show sustained international recognition.
- Entertainment groups must demonstrate at least one year of distinguished performance history.
P-3 Athletes and Entertainers
The P-3 visa is available to artists or entertainers entering the United States to perform, teach, or coach under a culturally unique program.

Other Temporary Visa Classifications
- O-2 –for critical support staff who accompany O-1 athletes or artists and are integral to the successful performance of the O-1 principal.
- P-1S, P-2S, and P-3S – forvital coaches, trainers, technicians, and other support staff to accompany P visa athletes, entertainers, and culturally unique performers. The support role must be indispensable to the P visa principal and require skills that cannot be readily replaced in the U.S.
Permanent Residency (Green Card) Options
- EB-1A (Extraordinary Ability)– for elite athletes, high profile entertainers, and distinguished artists who can demonstrate sustained national or international acclaim.
- EB-2/EB-3 (PERM)– a traditional employment-based sponsorship for athletes, entertainers, or supporting staff that hold the requisite degree requirements and experience.
- EB-2 National Interest Waivers (NIWs) – some athletes and entertainers may qualify for permanent residence without an employer sponsored PERM process if they can show that their work has substantial merit, is beneficial to the United States, and that waiving the standard labor certification process is in the national interest.
